You may find that on the winner's podium players don’t just show off their medals, sometimes they bite them. 

This practice is more and more popular in the sports field, often be seen from the Olympians to footballers.

Why does the player bite the medal?

There are two answers:

Answer one:

It’s a great pose for the photographer.

When the players step on the podium for photos after fierce competition, they need to do some naughty and funny poses, not just stand still and smile for the pressman.

But if the player bites too hard, the happy thing could turn to sad. In Vancouver, German luger David Moeller has broken his front tooth during his biting medal photo taken.

Then another question arise, why is biting not licking? 

For a long time, the tradition of biting gold is to test whether the gold is a real one. Pure gold is soft(2.5 Mohs mineral hardness scale), and the tooth is hard (5 Mohs mineral hardness scale). So the tooth mark will appear on the gold if you bite hard enough. If the gold is fake, no mark will leave on it.

As for the Olympic game, over 100 years ago, such as in the year 1904, the first place medal is made of solid gold, it worth taking a risk of broken teeth to test it. But nowadays, the first place medal is made of only 6 grams of gold and 494 grams of silver.

Answer two:

It is self-satisfaction behave of the player.

It is a great joy, for sportsmen or sportswomen who stand on the podium; victory is so quick they would like to taste it immediately.

A player who won the gold medal does not only have great talent but also spends much time and money in training. An arena is a place for proving themself, and the medal is the best prize for all these hardworking.

So "bite the medal" is a release of the joy and sorrow from the player's mind.
